This study wants to help people who had cancer and live in rural areas to quit smoking. They will use a text message program to help them stop smoking gradually over eight weeks. This is called a Scheduled Gradual Reduction (SGR). One group will get personalized text messages, and the other group will receive a booklet called NCI Clearing the Air, which also helps people quit smoking. Researchers will see which method helps people quit smoking better after six months. People who join need to have had cancer in the last 10 years, smoke at least 5 cigarettes a day, live in a rural area, have a cell phone for texting, and be at least 18 years old. They should not be in another quitting smoking study or using any medicine to help them quit smoking.
