Phase 4

ECSTATIC Study: This study focuses on children on a machine called ECMO, which helps their heart and lungs work. Children on ECMO often get platelet transfusions to prevent bleeding. Platelets are tiny parts of blood that help stop bleeding. The study will test two ways to give these transfusions: one with more platelets and one with fewer. This will help doctors find the best way to keep children safe while on ECMO.

ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) is a machine that supports the heart and lungs in very sick children. It is used in hospitals like the PICU, NICU, or CICU, which care for very ill children.

The study is looking at children from 0 to less than 18 years. It will compare two groups to see which amount of platelets is better to prevent serious bleeding or clotting problems.

  • The study will take place in 10 locations, mostly in the US.
  • It involves children with little or no bleeding problems.
  • Participants will be in the study for up to 21 days or until their ECMO treatment ends.

This research is important because it will help doctors make better choices for treating children on ECMO, making sure they get the right care.

Learn more about clinical trials

What is a clinical trial?

A clinical trial is a study designed to test specific interventions or treatments' effectiveness and safety, paving the way for new, innovative healthcare solutions.

Why should I take part in a clinical trial?

Participating in a clinical trial provides early access to potentially effective treatments and directly contributes to the healthcare advancements that benefit us all.

How long does a clinical trial take place?

The duration of clinical trials varies. Some trials last weeks, some years, depending on the phase and intention of the trial.

Do I get compensated for taking part in clinical trials?

Compensation varies per trial. Some offer payment or reimbursement for time and travel, while others may not.

How safe are clinical trials?
