This study looks at how well guided relaxation and acupuncture work to reduce pain in people with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). SCD is a condition where red blood cells are shaped like sickles, causing pain. The study involves 360 participants across three hospitals: University of Illinois, University of Florida, and Duke University. Acupuncture uses tiny needles to help relieve pain and guided relaxation helps calm the mind. The study lasts 6 weeks and aims to see if these methods reduce pain more than usual care.
Participants will be divided into groups to try different combinations of guided relaxation and acupuncture to find the best approach. The study also looks at how well these methods can be used in hospitals. To join, you must have SCD, speak English, and experience chronic pain. You cannot join if you've had a stem cell transplant, are in jail, or have other conditions that prevent participation.
