ECMO is a machine that helps very sick children's hearts and lungs. This study, called TITRE, is a special test for kids using ECMO. It compares two ways of giving red blood cell (RBC) transfusions. One way gives blood based on specific needs like bleeding. The other way uses certain blood level numbers from the hospital. The goal is to find out which method helps kids' organs work better and helps their brains develop well.
The study will take place in 18-20 places and will include 228 kids under 6 years old. Some children will get RBC transfusions based on their needs, and others by hospital numbers. The study will check the children's health while on ECMO, when they leave the hospital, and again at different times up to a year later. The study will use special tests to see if kids get better.
- Children must be under 6 years old and on a certain type of ECMO.
- The study will last until a year after the child is on ECMO.
- Children in other studies or with some health issues cannot join.
