This study looks at fenofibrate, a medicine, to see if it can stop diabetic retinopathy (DR) from getting worse. DR is an eye problem caused by diabetes. The study will last 6 years and will compare fenofibrate to a placebo (a pill with no medicine) in people with mild to moderate non-proliferative DR (NPDR), which means early-stage DR. The goal is to see if fenofibrate can stop DR from becoming more serious. The study also wants to find out if eye doctors can work safely with other doctors to give this medicine. If fenofibrate works, it might help people avoid more expensive and risky treatments for DR. Researchers will check how blood sugar changes affect DR, using a special tool that measures sugar levels all the time. They will also study how well the eyes work and look in the people who join the study.
- Participants must be 18-79 years old with type 1 or type 2 diabetes.
- No previous treatments for certain eye conditions in the past year.
- Participants should not have poor kidney function.
